part 1

 

아주 오랜 옛 날에 옥황상제가

갑자기 봉우리가 많은 멋진 산을 만들고 싶었다.

 

그런데 이미 세상은 다 만들어져서

자리를 잡은 상태였다.

그래서 옥황상제가 대회를 열어서

강원도 북쪽으로 바위들을 오라고 한다.

선착순 1만2천개의 봉우리를 만든다고 한다.

 

지역마다 잘난 바위들이 금강산 봉우리가 되기 위해 달려가는데

울산바위가 출발이 늦어서

뒤늦게 달려갔다.

 

그러다가 강원도에서 괜찮은 산에 도착했는데

울산바위는 여기가 금강산인가 싶어서

주변 사람들한테 물어보니

여기는 금강산이 아니라 설악산이란 것을 알게되고

이미 금강산은 1만2천 봉우리가 완성되서

더이상 바위를 받지 않는다는 것도 알게된다.

 

울산바위는 다시 울산으로 돌아가야되는데

울산에서 제일 큰 바위가

금강산 봉우리가 되지 못한 것이 창피해서

돌아갈 수 없었고,

설악산에 그냥 자리를 잡았다.

 

part 2

 

울산 바위 스토리는 계속된다.

사실 진짜 바위가 움직일리도 없고,

그냥 전래동화적인 스토리인데

문제는 따로 있다?!

 

 

 

울산에서 강원도에 돈을 받았다.

그것은 일종의 울산바위 대여료

강원도는 매년 울산쪽에 바위값을 주었다.

 

하지만 강원도도 먹고 살기 힘들고,

농사도 흉년이고 그러면

돈이나 뭘 주고 싶어도 줄게 없잖아?

그래도 울산에서는 우리 바위가 설악산에 있으니

돈을 달라고 요구했다.

 

그러다가 강원도의 도지사나 시장급 되는

사또? 원님?이 이제 더이상은 돈 못 준다.

전래동화 스토리 때문에 언제까지 돈을 줄 수 없다고 선언하자

울산에서는 울산바위를 가져가겠다고 강하게 나왔다.

 

강원도에서는 가져가라고 했다.

그런데 실제로 가져갈 수 없다..

왜냐면 울산바위는 둘레가 약 4km다.

이걸 어떻게 가져가겠어? ㅋㅋ

 

울산에서는 바위를 줄로 묶어 주면,

끌고 가겠다고 또다시 강하게 나왔다.

 

강원도에서는 둘레 4km의 바위를 묶어야 되는데

이걸 묶을 수가 없잖아?

영락없이 계속 울산에 돈을 줘야하는 상황이 되어버렸다.

 

그런데 설악산에 절에 살던 주지스님인 노승이 이야기를 알게되고,

그 절에는 동자승이 많았는데,

동자승들은 어릴 때부터 설악산에서 살아왔기 때문에 산을 잘 탔다.

 

그래서 동자승들을 시켜서,

울산바위를 둘러싸고,

풀을 엮어서 줄을 연결해 울산바위를 묶어버렸다.

 

강원도에서 울산바위 묶었으니 가져가라고 하니까,

울산에서 못가져간다고 패배를 선언하고,

그 후 강원도에서는 울산에 돈을 주지 않았다.

 

노승과 동자승이 살던 절을 기준으로,

주변에 마을 이름을 붙여주는데,

그 마을 이름이 속초다.

< 속초는 풀을 묶는다 >라는 뜻이다.

That is the Story of Ulsanbawi

 

Part 1

 

A long, long time ago, the Jade Emperor suddenly wanted to create a grand mountain full of majestic peaks.

But the world had already been made and settled, and there wasn't much room left.
So, the Jade Emperor announced a contest: he invited rocks and peaks from all around to gather in the northern region of Gangwon-do.

He declared he would select the first 12,000 rocks to form the new mountain called Geumgangsan.

From every region, famous and proud rocks rushed to become part of the Geumgangsan peaks.
But Ulsanbawi, the massive rock from Ulsan, was late to start.
It hurried north, trying to catch up.

 

On the way, it found a beautiful mountain and wondered, “Is this Geumgangsan?”
It asked the nearby rocks, and they said, “No, this is Seoraksan.”
Ulsanbawi also learned that Geumgangsan’s 12,000 peaks were already completed — they weren’t accepting any more rocks.

 

Ulsanbawi was supposed to return to Ulsan,
But being the biggest rock in Ulsan, it felt too ashamed to go back after failing to make it into Geumgangsan.
So, it just settled down right there in Seoraksan.

 

Part 2

 

The story of Ulsanbawi doesn’t end there.

Of course, rocks don’t really move like that — it’s just an old folktale.
But the real twist? There was money involved!

 

Gangwon-do started paying Ulsan as a sort of “Ulsanbawi rental fee.”
Every year, they gave compensation because their famous rock was living in Gangwon-do, not Ulsan.

But Gangwon-do wasn’t doing so well financially — poor harvests, tough economy…
Even if they wanted to pay, they didn’t have much to give.

 

Still, Ulsan insisted:
“Our rock is in your land — pay up!”

Eventually, the local governor (or magistrate) of Gangwon-do declared:
“We can’t keep paying you forever just because of some folktale!”

 

 

 

In response, Ulsan snapped back:
“Fine, we’ll just come get our rock then!”

Gangwon-do said, “Go ahead, take it.”

But… the problem?

Ulsanbawi has a circumference of about 4 kilometers.
How on earth are you supposed to move that? 😂

 

Ulsan fired back:
“Just tie it up with a rope — we’ll drag it back!”

Gangwon-do thought, “How do you tie up a 4km-wide rock?!”

Stuck in this ridiculous situation where they were still supposed to pay Ulsan, something had to change.

A wise old monk living in a nearby temple heard the tale.

He had many young monks — dongjaseung — who grew up on Seoraksan and knew the mountains well.

He instructed them to climb around Ulsanbawi, gather vines and plants, and tie them around the rock — essentially, wrapping it in a giant rope made of grass.

 

Then Gangwon-do said:
“There, we tied it. Now take it.”

 

Ulsan finally gave up:
“We… can’t take it.”

 

And from that day on, Gangwon-do stopped paying the fee.

To honor the old monk and the temple’s efforts, they named the nearby village Sokcho —
because “Sokcho” literally means “tie with grass.”
